Exercise Physiology in Chirnside Park

Who is Exercise Physiology actually for?

People sometimes assume Exercise Physiology is only for athletes, people recovering from a major injury or people who already enjoy exercise, but in reality I often work with people who feel the complete opposite.

You might be someone who has become less active over time, someone who has finished hospital rehabilitation and is wondering what happens next, someone managing an ongoing health condition, or simply someone who knows they need to move more but does not feel comfortable walking into a busy gym.

I'm Robyn Papworth, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist based in Chirnside Park, and a large part of my job is helping people find a way of moving that feels realistic, useful and much less intimidating.

A simple way to think about it

Exercise Physiology may suit you if movement has become harder, less familiar or more intimidating than it used to be.

Sometimes the reason is physical. Sometimes it is confidence. Sometimes it is a health condition, a hospital stay, a long period of inactivity or simply the feeling that you have fallen out of the habit of moving and do not know how to start again.

You do not need to arrive with a dramatic diagnosis or a complicated exercise history. If movement feels harder than it should, if you are unsure what is appropriate, or if you would feel more comfortable having professional support while you rebuild confidence, Exercise Physiology may be worth exploring.

After hospital or outpatient rehab

You have finished rehabilitation, but you do not feel ready for a normal gym.

This is one of the most common gaps I see. You may have had support while you were in hospital or attending outpatient rehabilitation, but once that ends it can feel as though you are suddenly expected to manage everything on your own.

A small Exercise Physiology setting can provide a gentler step between structured rehabilitation and exercising completely independently.

Older adults

You want to keep your strength, balance and confidence for everyday life.

Exercise Physiology can be useful when the goal is not about sport at all, but about everyday things such as walking, standing from a chair, feeling steadier, managing stairs or keeping enough strength and confidence to stay involved in daily life.

You may prefer the playful Monday seniors group, the quieter Tuesday and Friday circuit, or individual support depending on what feels most comfortable.

Type 2 Diabetes

You want support to exercise in a way that feels manageable.

If you are living with Type 2 Diabetes, you may already know that movement is important, but knowing that and feeling confident enough to exercise are two very different things.

Our Type 2 Diabetes Exercise Physiology class is designed to give people a supported place to move, with seated, lighter and supported alternatives available when needed.

You can also speak with your GP about whether Medicare-supported Exercise Physiology services may be appropriate for you.

Balance and falls confidence

You have started feeling less steady than you used to.

Sometimes people gradually begin avoiding stairs, uneven surfaces, longer walks or busy places because they no longer trust their balance the way they once did.

We can work on strength, balance, coordination and confidence in ways that are adjusted to your current level rather than expecting you to simply push through the fear.

After a period of inactivity

You know you need to move more, but you have no idea where to begin.

This might happen after illness, stress, caring responsibilities, injury, retirement or simply years of putting everything else first.

Starting again can feel surprisingly difficult, especially if your body no longer responds the way you remember. Exercise Physiology gives us somewhere to begin without pretending you should already be fitter than you are.

People who dislike gyms

You want the physical benefits without the intimidating gym culture.

Some people simply do not enjoy commercial gyms, and that is a perfectly reasonable barrier to exercise.

I want the space to feel quieter, friendlier and much more personal, with room to have a conversation, laugh and work at your own pace while still doing something useful for your body.

It does not have to look impressive

Exercise can still be valuable when it looks very ordinary.

A lot of useful Exercise Physiology work looks nothing like what people picture when they imagine a workout. It might involve practising getting up from a chair, stepping over a low obstacle, walking at a steady pace, using a recumbent bike, building leg strength, improving confidence with balance or simply learning how to tolerate a little more activity than you could before.

The important part is that the movement is helping you towards something useful in your life, and that you feel able to keep coming back to it.

What if you are nervous?

You do not have to arrive feeling confident.

In fact, a lot of people seek Exercise Physiology precisely because they do not feel confident.

You may worry that you will be the least fit person there, that you will not understand the exercises, that everybody will be watching you or that you will not be able to keep up.

My approach is to remove as much of that pressure as possible. Exercises can be adjusted, you can take a break, you can ask questions and you do not need to match anybody else.

I want you to be able to smile while you move.

Physical benefits still matter, but so does the experience of being there. If the environment feels welcoming enough that you want to come back, we have a much better chance of movement becoming part of your life rather than another thing you tried once and stopped.

You can ask your GP whether Exercise Physiology may be suitable for you.
